New Stallion on the Jud Little Ranch What makes a good barrel racing stallion with which
to breed? Ask twenty people
and you are likely to get 20 different answers but given a choice, there
are still some standouts that everyone wants . . . . assuming you could
find them. That’s where
good friends and connections help. Just
ask Jud Little. John Read Foster, of Scottsville, Kentucky told Jud he knew
where the last breedable son of Pa Jones could be found. "That
call made my day", recalls Jud. Jud had owned an own daughter of Pa Jones – and a full sister of Brandy Thirteen a great mare named Oncey. Brandy won the Oklahoma World Futurity in 1989. Now suddenly, he saw an opportunity to own a
breedable son of Pa Jones. In a word, Jud was thrilled. The tip paid off.
Wasting no time, Jud closed the deal, purchasing Brownie Jones
sight unseen, pending vet exam. Sixteen
year old Brownie was serving duty as a tease stud when he was loaded up for
his trip to Oklahoma. Back in Ardmore, everyone loved him.
The solid black stallion has impeccable manners and is a joy to be
around. The breeding requests
have been overwhelming. For Jud Little, the find was akin to uncovering
sunken treasure. “You always hope to find something like this . .
. but you certainly don’t expect it.
That’s half the fun.” Jud
recalls. But the story
doesn’t end there. Also
included in the purchase was a ten-year old mare by Flaming Jet and own daughter of Flit Bar Beggar. “We’ve been getting calls every day." Jud said. For those of you unfamiliar with the Pa Jones legacy
a little background might be in order.
Pa Jones was brought to the limelight by trainer, breeder, and
barrel racer Dixie Pring of Calhan, CO. “I was thrilled that Jud found Brownie” claimed
Dixie. “I hope the Pa Jones
lineage continues to prosper.” Dixie continues to win in open competition in tough
Colorado competition riding Pa Jones progeny.
Her gelding, Fred, was a son of Pa Jones.
As a young five year old, Fred was $4,000 short of
qualifying for the NFR, Dixie held the horse back because of his
age. She planned on hauling Fred for the NFR the next year but was
curtailed by injury. Fred was a solid WPRA rodeo horse.
Dixie is still winning on Pa Jones horses - they stand a paint son of Pa
Jones on the Pring Ranch.
Dixie claims the Pa Jones progeny inherit natural rate and athletic
ability. Heavy handed riders need not apply.
These horses know how to turn. Dixie explains further,
“These horses are naturals and possess the talent to work alone.
My husband, Jack took me out one day in the middle of our thousand
acre pasture.” “I’d been hitting a barrel and he was going to
help me break my habit.”
Dixie recalled, smiling. In only a halter, Fred proved to Dixie the horse
didn’t need any help. He
smoked the barrel pattern. And
as they say . . . the rest is history. Thanks to the Little Ranch for reviving the Pa Jones lineage. Click
